New Lamps for Old - History book
Redcar & Cleveland College, A hidden history 1709 - 2009
by Peter M. Chester.
![]() |
In 2008, Gary Groom, the Principal of Redcar & Cleveland College, commissioned a history of the College. This was to commemorate both the opening of the new College building in 2008 and the 300th anniversary of the opening of the very first Sir William Turner’s School, in Kirkleatham in 1709. The book has been written by Peter Chester, himself an old boy of Sir William Turner’s School, who taught history at both Sir William Turner’s Sixth Form College and Redcar & Cleveland College. The book is a substantial and illustrated volume, and is based on a large variety of historical sources, including oral testimony. |
|
Overview
It covers the story of Sir William Turner’s Schools and College, Cleveland Technical College, and Redcar & Cleveland College – all in one framework that has tried to look for similarity and common threads across the educational institutions involved.
