Who is the training for?

These short courses have been specially designed for people who are unemployed and who are seeking the skills and qualifications to secure an interesting and well-paid job.

The programme has been developed by the College in response to “Skills Conditionality”, the Department of Work and Pensions’ and Department of Innovation and Skills’ new approach to skills shortages and learning needs amongst unemployed people. 

Those eligible for a place on this course must be referred to the College by an appropriate agency.

What will I learn?

The courses provide you with skills and knowledge that will prepare you to look for work, make job applications, attend interviews and successfully work in your chosen career area:

What are the courses offered?

What do I gain at the end of it?

  • A level 1 or level 2 Award or Certificate from the Open College Network
  • Certificate in Adult Literacy/ Functional English
  • Certificate in Adult Numeracy/ Functional Maths

How long will it take?

The Award takes an average of four weeks.
The Certificate takes up to 12 weeks.
Each unit of learning accumulates 1, 2 or 3 credits.

Where are the courses held?

All teaching takes place at Redcar & Cleveland College, Corporation Road, Redcar, which is easily accessible via public transport or car. There is also free, safe car parking on site for students.

The College’s fantastic new building offers outstanding learning spaces, alongside the highest quality professional standard salons, workshops, laboratories and IT suites. Staff aim to offer a welcoming and friendly approach, with help and advice readily available when needed. Studying in this environment gives students the best possible chance of success.

There is a wide choice of subjects in the units available including: construction trades, ICT, retail, sports & leisure, as well as units to help you in career planning and interview skills.

All your options will be discussed with you when you come to College for an interview.

For the Award, 6 credits are needed. You must choose at least one mandatory unit. 

For the Certificate, 21 credits are needed. You must choose at least two mandatory units. 

Units can also be offered at different levels and learners are able to mix and match taking different levels of units together, this will be discussed at the guidance interview on entry to the programme.

What can I go on to next?

You can choose either to move straight into paid work in your chosen career, if a suitable vacancy arises. Alternatively, you can continue your training and gain further qualifications through to levels 2 and 3. These courses start at the beginning of each College term or approximately every 12 weeks.

When can I start?

Right away! Opportunities to start are weekly, commencing with a guidance interview, initial assessment and a discussion relating to your level and choice of learning areas.

You may also be offered ‘Taster sessions’, where you spend some time in the course areas you are interested in, to help you decide which units to choose.

How do I apply?

Speak to your employment advisor, who will make arrangements for you to attend College for an initial guidance interview.
