Former students of Redcar’s Sir William Turner School who fell during the First and Second World Wars were remembered today (6th November).

Current and serving members of the armed forces, members of the public, present and former students and staff attended the annual Remembrance Day Service at Redcar & Cleveland College.

A Celtic Cross commemorates old boys who fell during the Great War, whilst a bronze plaque marks the memory of those who died in the 1939-45 conflict. Both were re-sited following the redevelopment of the present Redcar & Cleveland College site.

Wooden crosses will be laid for each Sir William Turner School student who lost their lives.

The service is a tradition maintained by the college dating back to the days of Sir William Turner’s school in the early 20th century and this year was led by the Rev. Canon John Weetman, Vicar of St Peter’s Church, Redcar.

An Honour Guard from the Royal British Legion led a march past of the college’s war memorial before wreaths are laid by staff, students and members of the public.

Peter Chester of Redcar and Cleveland College, who is a member of the Sir William Turner Trust and who led the organisation of this year’s ceremony, said:

“It is vitally important that we do not forget the past sacrifices that have been made by many young men from Redcar and across the country, who have sacrificed their lives in order that we can be here today.”
