A series of events at Redcar & Cleveland College next week (Wednesday 12th October) will give prospective students and members of the public an opportunity to find out about college life and try out a range of new skills.

The college is holding an open evening for prospective students between 5pm and 8pm, and at the same time is hosting “Have a Go” taster sessions.

The sessions are part of the build up to the WorldSkills competition, dubbed the ‘Skills Olympics’, which takes place in London this month and aims to give people the opportunity to try out learning a range of new skills.

In the build up to the day, some of the college’s students have been taking part in activities to try out skills which aren’t ordinarily part of their college courses.

Amongst those taking part were Hair and Beauty students Jacqueline Loughman and Angelene Porritt Level 3 Beauty Therapy.who had a go at learning some basic plumbing skills in the college’s workshops.

Jacqueline who is studying Level 3 Beauty Therapy, said: “It was great fun to have a go at learning some plumbing skills. It’s shown me that it’s possible to grasp the basics of a new skill in a relatively short period of time.”

The college is aiming to deliver up to 2,000 ‘Have A Go’ taster sessions and anyone who wishes to develop their skills further in a particular area will be able to get advice and guidance from college tutors on the range of courses available.

College Principal, Gary Groom, said: “Our Open Evening and Have A Go event is a great way for prospective students and local people to come into college, try out a new skill and get a taste of what college life is all about.

“The college has strong links with the WorldSkills event, including a group of our own students travelling to the event in London to give a master class demonstration, and we’re delighted that we’re able to bring a part of this prestigious event back to the college at Redcar too.
