5 reasons why volunteering is awesome!
Today marks the start of Student Volunteering Week 2018 (19th – 25th February 2018), a national campaign to celebrate the impact of student volunteers and encourage more students to get involved.
If you’ve never thought about volunteering, we’ve listed our top 5 reasons below as to why you should consider it…
- Volunteering makes you happier
Research suggests that students who volunteer are happier and more satisfied with their lives. We’ve all experienced a ‘helpers’ high’ at some point – the happy rush feeling followed by calmness after we’ve performed a good deed – volunteering is a great way to experience this more often!
- Make a real difference to your community
Volunteering is a great way to feel better connected to your local community. There may be non-profit groups who could really benefit from student volunteers, so getting involved is your chance to make a real difference. By giving something back in this way and seeing your positive impact, you will feel part of something bigger than just yourself.
- Meet new people
Anyone can be a volunteer so it’s a great chance to meet new friends and like-minded people, learn about different cultures and discover new interests. Interactive Voice Response (IVR) research showed that 74% of students experienced a wider range of friendships through volunteering.
- Learn new skills
Volunteering is a great way to branch out and try something new. You may discover a hidden passion for something and take it up as a new hobby. Students benefit greatly from the transferable skills they learn through volunteering such as time management, communicating with others and being committed, which are great for personal development but also extremely valuable when it comes to looking for a job. This leads us to say that volunteering is…
- …Great for your CV!
Students wishing to progress in a certain career path should use volunteering as a way to gain experience in the industry that interests them. It’s a great way to test the waters before fully committing. It’s estimated that 3 out of 4 employees hire a candidate with work experience on their CV compared to those candidates without, so volunteering during college is a great way to make you stand out from the crowd and make you more employable in the future!
