5 Skills Required For Working In The Forces

5 Skills Required For Working In The Forces

A career within the armed forces is extremely challenging, both mentally and physically, but can also bring with it a great sense of pride.

Before considering a career in the forces, you should make yourself aware of the skills and personal attributes that employers will be looking for in new recruits. To help you with this decision, we’ve put together a list of five key skills:

  1. Excellent communications skills – To work in the forces, you must be able to communicate clearly and concisely, as well as being an outstanding listener. You could find yourself in a potentially life-threatening situation and it is essential that there are no miscommunications.
  2. Stamina and physical fitness – Whether you’re thinking about a career in the armed forces, the police force, or the ambulance service, it is essential that you are at peak fitness to perform at the highest standard in your chosen career path.
  3. Quick thinking and problem-solving – You may find yourself in high-pressure situations and you must be able to make and act upon a decision quickly and efficiently to ensure the safety of yourself and others.
  4. Teamwork – Whilst leadership skills are important, it is vital that you are able to work effectively as a team member to ensure the success of the task at hand.
  5. Responsibility – You alone are responsible for your own actions, however, you should also show a sense of responsibility towards your colleagues, making sure you have their back in times of crisis.

The skills outlined above can also be applied to several other public sector careers, such as the police force, ambulance service and prison service.

If you think you possess these key skills and would like to find out more, take a look at our Uniformed Public Services course then contact us to discuss it further.
