Finance Explained

Finance Explained

Eligible new part-time students undertaking designated Higher Education courses can take out a yearly tuition fee loan from Student Finance England.

Your course will be free at the point of entry and you only make repayments if you are earning over £25,000 per year once you have completed your course.

The courses that are designated for tuition fees are:

  • First Degrees (BA Education & Training)
  • Foundation Degrees (FdA Early Years, FdA Supporting Teaching and Learning)
  • Higher National Certificates (HNC Building Studies, Chemical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Instrumentation & Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering)
  • Initial training of teachers (Certificate in Education, Prof Grad Cert Ed)

The amount of ‘fee loan’ a student can apply for cannot exceed the fee charged by the university.

Eligibility for Part-Time Tuition Fee Loan

To be eligible for financial support for a part-time undergraduate course you must meet certain criteria:

  • You must have ‘settled status’ in the UK i.e. be a UK citizen or have been granted ‘indefinite leave to remain’ by the Home Office
  • You must also have lived in the country for at least three years prior to the beginning of your course. This does not apply to people granted refugee status
  • You must be enrolled on a course which is at least the equivalent of 25% (normally a minimum of at least 30 credits) of a full-time course. All the designated courses listed in this section meet this criterion
  • Your course must last for at least one year.

Equivalent Level Qualification

  • You are not entitled to the part-time tuition fee loan if you already have a qualification that is equal to or higher than the qualification you wish to study
  • Initial Teacher Training courses are exempt from the above restriction.
