Apprentices bring home national industry awards

The future is looking bright for Beyond Housing apprentices Bailey and Chloe who impressed judges at the Direct Works Forum Repairs and Maintenance Awards this week.

Joinery apprentice Bailey was named Apprentice of the Year at the glittering award ceremony in Coventry, while plumbing apprentice Chloe scooped the Chairman’s Choice Award.

Supporting the pair’s award nomination, Beyond Housing’s Apprenticeship Co-ordinator Emma Tooth said: “Bailey and Chloe have made so much progress during their time with us. It was fantastic to see them both recognised.”

A former Carillion apprentice, Bailey’s future career was left uncertain following the construction giant’s closure last year.

Happy to be snapped up by Beyond Housing, the 18-year-old from Lazenby said: “I had chosen joinery because it was something I enjoyed at school.”

Working at the housing association he is now about to complete his level 2 apprenticeship in partnership with Redcar & Cleveland College and is now looking forward to moving on to a level 3 qualification.

Picking up a wide range of skills, he said: “I have worked on kitchens, doors and windows and have now moved on to outside work like gutterings, fascias and fences.”

Runner up in the Apprentice of the Year category as well as being named Chairman’s Choice, Chloe, 22, of Redcar, has also shone as an apprentice with Beyond Housing.

Apprenticeship Co-ordinator Emma said: “Chloe has shown real commitment and determination and her achievements are something that should be celebrated.”

The Direct Works Forum is a representative body for housing associations and local authorities employing their own trade staff to carry out repair and maintenance work.

Emma said: “For Bailey and Chloe to be shortlisted is a massive achievement.”

To go on to win, she said: “We are extremely proud.”

Redcar & Cleveland College’s Business Development Co-ordinator Becky Williams said: “Beyond Housing is a fantastic employer to work with and I am really pleased the learners have had their hard work recognised by winning these awards.”
