Body armour gives students an insight into life in the public services

Public Services students have been getting to grips with the reality of a life in uniform.

The team are discovering the real weight behind wearing a bulletproof vest thanks to a donation from SafeGuard Clothing.

By working directly with colleges the international body armour manufacturer and distributor aims to help further develop the quality of educational programmes by providing some of the tools needed to give students a more hands-on teaching experience.

And what better way to learn what it really feels like to wear and train in an armoured vest than to have a go yourself?

Public Services lecturer Jane Rishworth said: “Such donations create invaluable opportunities and enhance the teaching experience at colleges like Redcar & Cleveland College.

“The bulletproof vest will now be used for role play and technical analysis to improve the quality of the Public Services programme and educational practices.”

First-hand experience of using such police, military and security personnel level professional equipment gives students a unique opportunity to get used to the sort of protective clothing they will use when they embark upon their chosen careers.

Jane said: “It is a great confidence boost for the students to be able to try out the equipment they could be using (and in this case wearing) in the future.

“It also makes them aware of why they have to pass the minimum fitness test, knowing they will be wearing this weighty equipment all day every day.”

SafeGuard Clothing is actively involved in the research and development of finding new materials to enhance the wearability of protective body armour for frontline services.

Speaking on behalf of SafeGuard Clothing Thomas Bowman said: “We believe access to body armour should be something all students in Public Services courses can take advantage of.

“Safeguard’s applied industry-based model in our manufacturing process is achieved through continuous and strong collaborations with the Police, MOD, Fire Service and Ambulance services. This allows us to really enhance the quality of our tactical vests.”
