Introduction

A course for those who want to develop their reading, writing and speaking and listening skills to achieve a GCSE qualification or for those who require a Grade 4 or above in GCSE English to progress to further courses in further education or higher education or for employment purposes. You may also be interested in this course if you have achieved a Grade D/Grade 3 or below and wish to improve your grade.

What will I learn

Unit 1 - Explorations in creative Reading and Writing Unit 2 - Writers viewpoints and perspectives Unit 3 - Non-exam Assessment: Spoken Language During the course, you will examine fiction and non-fiction texts, spoken language, you will also consider how you approach writing and, of course, there will be an element of spelling, punctuation and grammar to cover. By analysing and comparing texts, you will be able to improve on your ability to interpret the author’s messages and in turn improve your own communication skills.

How will I learn

The focus of the course is firmly on weekly, taught sessions at the college in a classroom environment. A variety of resources will be available to cover all the topics required. These include: • PowerPoint presentations • Practice exam style assessments • You can access additional tutorial videos and resources online through Microsoft Teams • Peer and tutor support • Opportunity for one-to-one support with our subject specialist progress coach You will be asked to complete homework on a weekly basis, however online resources and lessons will be available to help you.

What's next

GCSE English is required in many professions such as teaching or nursing. It can also lead to A Levels and is a good foundation for enrolling on Access to Higher Education.

Additional Information

Students are required to purchase course book, a notepad and pen. Although you may be used to learning about grammar and vocabulary as a result of your early education years, you should know that this GCSE course is much more advanced, therefore more interesting than ever before.
