Glow in the dark dodgeball brings in the cash for Sport Relief

There was no dodging the fundraising action at Redcar and Cleveland College. Students from across the college came together for a charity glow in the dark dodgeball tournament. The novel game was part of the Sport and Fitness students’ run of Sport Relief activities.

“The idea proved really popular,” said student engagement officer James Hunter, with learners quick to sign up to get involved. For one morning only the sports hall at the campus on Corporation Road was plunged into darkness and the usual sports equipment replaced with glow in the balls, cones and vests. Glow sticks festooned the dodgeball court, while both players and the audience members daubed themselves in glow in the dark paint.

“It’s something that we have tried at the college before and so we thought we would give it another go,” said James. “The students enjoy it, it raises money for a good cause and it also brings different course areas together.”

Level 1 Sport and Active Leisure students helped organise the game which saw teams from the likes of Hair and Beauty, Electrical Engineering, Childcare and Hair Media Make-up go head-to-head. With student services the current trophy holders, the pressure was on to see who would come out triumphant.

Sport Relief raises money to help tackle critical issues affecting people across the UK and around the world. Students and staff at the college were keen to do their bit for charity and have some fun along the way.

James said: “For the Sports students it is a great experience as it’s realistic to the type of thing they might need to do in the future, it tests their organisational skills and encourages them to take the lead, talk to people and get the teams on and off the court.”
