When it comes to career goals few are more focused than Redcar student Poppy Smith.

The 17-year-old from Redcar knows exactly what she wants to do and all the signs show she has the skills to get there.

With her heart set on a future in fibrous plastering, Poppy is currently mastering the basics at Redcar & Cleveland College.

Describing the course as “the best thing I have ever done” she is now considering those all-important next steps and looking for an employer to help her build some real hands-on experience.

Why did you choose to study Plastering at Redcar & Cleveland College?

I studied Business last year and that made me realise I didn’t want to be to be sat behind a desk every day. I wanted to be doing something. I have always done some renovation with my mum and one day I suddenly thought why not plastering? It was a spur of the moment thing.

Has it been the right choice?

I have never regretted it for a moment. It is the best thing I have ever done. Before I have always found that I haven’t been that interested in the things I have studied, but this is something I love doing.

Tell us about the course.

I started on Level 1 Plastering at the beginning of the year but after looking at our grades myself and another student were brought straight up to Level 2. It has been great and a lot of fun. I have made really good friends. It is a great environment to be in.

What made you choose Redcar & Cleveland College?

Redcar was one of the only college’s in the region to offer the course that I wanted to do. When I came and spoke to the tutor he was really enthusiastic and I was really excited to get started.

What is a typical day like?

It is really hands-on. We do a bit of theory. It isn’t easy but it is different in an enjoyable way. You get lots of practice in the workshop. The group is great fun, we have a laugh but work hard.

What qualities do you need to work in fibrous plastering?

With the ornate work, patience is key as you could be working on one piece for hours. If you are working on cornices it can be really intricate. You need to focus.

Would you recommend the plastering courses at Redcar & Cleveland College to other people?

Definitely. Coming on to the course has really helped me to broaden my horizons and see where I want to go in my career. I’m really looking forward to it.

What’s next for you?

At the end of the course I’m hoping to find employment or an apprenticeship. I really want to keep learning and to build my skills and experience.
