New wave of students clean up at Redcar

Students quite literally got the academic year off to a clean sweep at Redcar and Cleveland College.

The new starters spent an environmentally friendly afternoon clearing rubbish from Redcar beach.

“As a college we are keen to help our local community,” said the college’s computing lecturer Sam Beel.

And following on from the good example set by FRED (Friends of Redcar) who took part in their own litter pick earlier this month, she said: “What better way to make our town a better place for everyone than helping to keep its beach clean?”

The student litter pick was organised by a team of staff from across the college and took in a variety of subject areas ranging from IT to construction to engineering.

The young people were tasked with paying particular attention to plastics and recyclable materials.

Sam said: “There has been so much awareness raising around plastics and the damage it is doing to our oceans, this seemed a good opportunity to bring that important message home to our students.”

Around 50 students and staff took part and even a heavy downpour didn’t stop students from playing their part.

Students Lewis Surtees and Lee Whitehead were among the volunteers to take part. Lewis, 18, of Redcar, said: “It is nice to be able to do something for the community.”

While, Lee, also 18, of Middlesbrough, added: “It’s good to know that we are helping to make the beach cleaner.”

With plans to make the litter pick a regular event, Sam said: “It’s a great way for students from different vocational areas to work as a team and get to know each other, while doing something to help the environment at the same time.”
