Redcar & Cleveland College renames care wing in honour of Mo Mowlam

Redcar & Cleveland College has today dedicated its state-of-the-art care wing to one of the town’s most respected figures, Mo Mowlam.

Named after the former Redcar & Cleveland MP, the care wing was dedicated to Mo Mowlam at an event attended by staff, students, community organisations and Mayor of Redcar, Cllr Karen King.

The dedication follows a competition which asked students and local people to suggest deserving figures worthy of recognition. After a number of entries, the team at Redcar & Cleveland College decided that ‘Mo Mowlam’ was a deserving winner.

Mandy Morris, Vice Principal Curriculum at Redcar & Cleveland College, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people turn up to celebrate the dedication to Mo Mowlam, who always spoke of her constituency with pride and set up her own charity to improve the health and wellbeing of others”

“The Mo Mowlam Care Wing will be used by students on Health & Social Care courses and has some fantastic facilities, including a three-bed ward, fully functioning ambulance, clinic area and Nurses station which will provide students with the real hands-on experience they will need in their chosen careers.”

Students also get the opportunity to work with a range of organisations linked to the Health & Social Care sector such as Healthwatch, to develop their skills and understanding.

Carole Marshall from Healthwatch commented “We have enjoyed building strong working relationships with the college over the past few years, we have seen a cohort of young students show great interest and make meaningful contributions into how health and social care services are designed and delivered. We are looking forward to building on our existing relationship with the college and welcome any students who would like to support the work of Healthwatch in the future”.

Redcar & Cleveland College spoke with Mrs Mowlam’s estate in order to gain permission for the dedication and were contacted by Mo’s sister, Jean, who said: “Naming the new care wing in Mo’s name is a lovely idea and I know that she would have been absolutely delighted.”

Competition winner, Louise Carder, added: “Mo was the MP for the area when I moved to the North East, her fighting spirit is synonymous with the regions fighting spirit and is someone I have great admiration and respect for ”
