Redcar and Stockton colleges celebrate new venture with Festival of Thrift partnership

Redcar and Cleveland College and Stockton Riverside College have partnered with the Festival of Thrift to mark their recent merger.

The two further education colleges, which successfully joined forces in August, will be celebrating the coming together of the two colleges and engaging with their local communities at the Festival on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 September.

With sites across Stockton, Billingham and now Redcar, Stockton Riverside College also incorporates SRC Bede Sixth Form, NETA Training Group and The Skills Academy.

During the event the colleges’ students and staff will run a variety of activities and demonstrations across the Festival’s Kirkleatham site.

These will include arts and crafts, with products available to buy, hair and makeup by the Production Arts Makeup and Beauty Therapy teams, a practical workshop run by NETA Training and a series of practical workshops including making, upcycling and restoring delivered by the college’s Construction team.

In addition, Creative Film and TV Production students will be putting together their own short film focused around the Festival

The colleges also lent their support before the Festival even began when Stockton Riverside College Makeup for Production students used their skills to help turn local volunteers into battle-weary soldiers as part of the thrifty Atonement film production to recreate the famous Redcar beach scene.

The merged college’s Director of Marketing Mark Flannery said: “Redcar and Cleveland College and Stockton Riverside College and are delighted to be partners at this year’s Festival of Thrift. This is a fantastic event with activities for all of the family and we are looking forward to engaging with our local communities and showcasing some of the great work that our students and tutors do at the colleges as part of this year’s exciting line-up of events.

“The Festival is a great way to promote a culture of enterprise among our students and to show how many of the hands-on skills learnt in the classroom can be used to live a more sustainable and creative life.”

Festival of Thrift Director Stella Hall said: “It’s wonderful that Stockton Riverside College and Redcar and Cleveland College are joining us to spread the word about their exciting new venture.

“We are so happy to welcome them as one of our wonderful Festival partners and to thank them for their much appreciated support.  Without our partners we would not be able to deliver our hugely popular, award-winning event so it is fantastic to add another name to our very prestigious list of supporters.”
