Redcar Student Receives Special Commendation at North East SkillBuild

A Redcar & Cleveland College student was awarded third place and received a special commendation at the annual North East SkillBuild competition which recently took place at Darlington College.

Lewis Stephenson, who is completing a Modern Apprenticeship in Carpentry at the College, was praised for his attitude after helping his competitors to complete their builds within the allocated time.

Taking part in the Senior Carpentry category, competitors were given six hours to produce a full-scale component based on a drawing they were provided with at the start of the challenge.

Keith Smith, lecturer in Carpentry and Joinery at Redcar & Cleveland College, said: “I’d usually only enter second or third-year candidates into the senior category but Lewis was extremely enthusiastic and keen to get involved.

“He performed exceedingly well on the day and was a credit to the College – not only demonstrating that he had the skills needed to compete with those who had been in the trade for longer, but displaying a fantastic attitude. He should be very proud.”

SkillBuild, delivered by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), is the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for construction trainees and apprentices.

Winners of each category from the North East SkillBuild are invited to compete at the national finals, held at Birmingham’s NEC and have the potential to go on to the International Skill Olympics which take place on a European and global stage.

Keith continued: “In a year’s time, Lewis will have an even greater understanding of his craft and I’m confident he will stand a chance of making it to the national finals, or beyond, should he choose to enter again.”
