Introduction

A course for those who want to develop their reading, writing and speaking and listening skills to achieve a GCSE qualification or for those who require a Grade 4 or above in GCSE English to progress to further courses in FE or HE or for employment purposes. You may also be interested in this course if you have achieved a Grade D/Grade 3 or below and wish to improve your grade.

What will I learn

This course includes three units: • Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing • Writers Viewpoints and Perspectives • Non-exam Assessment: Spoken Language

How will I learn

The focus of the course is firmly on weekly, taught sessions at the college in a classroom environment. A variety of resources will be available to cover all the topics required. These include: • PowerPoint presentations • A range of activities • Practice exam style assessments There is the option of either a day or evening class. You will be asked to complete homework on a weekly basis, however online resources and lessons will be available to help you.

What's next

GCSE English is required in many professions such as teaching or nursing. It can also lead to A Levels and is a good foundation for enrolling on Access to Higher Education.

Additional Information

Students are required to purchase course book, a notepad and pen. Although you may be used to learning about grammar and vocabulary as a result of your early education years, you should know that this GCSE course is much more advanced, therefore more interesting than ever before. During the course, you will examine fiction and non-fiction texts, spoken language, you will also consider how you approach writing and, of course, there will be an element of spelling, punctuation and grammar to cover. By analysing and comparing texts, you will be able to improve on your ability to interpret the author’s messages and in turn improve your own communication skills.
