*UPDATED* Hundreds of runners are expected to descend on Redcar this weekend ready for the Redcar Running Festival.

Among them will be a team of students and staff proud to be flying the flag for Redcar and Cleveland College.

The Redcar Running Festival is organised by Everyone Active and New Marske Harriers on behalf of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

The event is aimed at encouraging people to get active and with this in mind there is a choice of a 2km Fun Run, the 5km Redcar Beacon run, the 10km Redcar Zetland and the Redcar Half Marathon.

Redcar and Cleveland College’s team will tackle the 5km Redcar Beacon run this Sunday.

They are raising money for Redcar & Cleveland Mind, as voted by the College students.

Please show your support by sponsoring the team at: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/redcarclevelandcollege

In the meantime we have been catching up with some of our runners to see how they are feeling ahead of the race…

Jason Faulkner - Campus Principal

Why are you taking part?
"I believe in healthy body, healthy mind and it is events like the Redcar Running Festival that motivate people to make changes in their life for the better. As the Campus Principal of Redcar and Cleveland College it is also important to lead by example in promoting the health benefits of exercise."

Will it be a challenge?
"I haven’t taken part in an organised running event for some time, my last event was the Great North Run about five years ago. I feel it will be a challenge and it will very much depend on the direction of the wind to define the true challenge."

What have you been doing to prepare?
"I do try and stay reasonably fit and healthy; since committing to the 5km I have been for a couple of runs but no real training, which I may regret."

And what are you looking forward to most?
"The atmosphere at the events is generally the most enjoyable part of the day, seeing the communities participating and supporting each other. I will also be looking forward to the finish."

Megan McCready – Marketing Manager

Why are you taking part?
“It’s an opportunity to be involved in a local event and it’s great that the College is supporting it.”

Will it be a challenge?
“I’m not a runner so it will certainly be a challenge"

What have you been doing to prepare?
“Positive thinking.”

And what are you looking forward to most?
“Crossing the finish line.”

James Fahey – Functional Skills and GCSE Maths Tutor

Why are you taking part?
“I have previously trained and competed in athletics and it was a good opportunity to represent Redcar and Cleveland College in a local running event.”

Will it be a challenge?
“I will put as much effort into the race as possible, due to this I will definitely find running three miles at a fast pace very challenging and painful.”

What have you been doing to prepare?
“I quit running four months ago. I am only completing one week of training leading up to the race. I am running for six days aiming to run around 30 miles across the whole week.”

And what are you looking forward to most?
“The whole event. I find running events very enjoyable from the warm up, competing against other athletes within the race, crossing the finish line and the support from the spectators.”

Lois Vickers – Learning Resource Centre Assistant

Why are you taking part?
“I am a regular runner and took a chance to represent the College in a local event.”

Will it be a challenge?
“I run 5K distances twice a week so it will not really be too much of a challenge for me.”

What are you looking forward to most?
“The atmosphere and taking part in a run within my local community.”

Emma Booth – Head of Apprenticeships at Stockton Riverside College

Why are you taking part?
“To support the College and to show a united front from Stockton Riverside College.”

Will it be a challenge?
“It shouldn’t be too much of a challenge as I ran the Great North Run two weeks again, but have since eaten like a horse, so I need to get back on it!”

And what are you looking forward to most?
“I love a team event and getting to know Redcar colleagues better.”
