Take an eager team, a generous spoonful of enthusiasm and a dollop of student support, and you have all the ingredients it takes to whisk up a charity fundraiser.

That was certainly the case at Redcar and Cleveland College where students and staff joined the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

The international event aims to raise awareness and funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

“It is something that we like to support here at the college, not just to raise money, but also to promote the importance of the charity’s work to our students,” said marketing officer Connor Kerr.

The 24-year-old from Thornaby, said: “Everybody knows someone who is effected by cancer.”

And for him, this year’s event meant all the more as his grandmother is currently fighting her own cancer battle.

“I didn’t really appreciate before the full extent of the service that Macmillan offer,” he said. “It is not just about being on the other end of the phone if you need someone to talk to but it is also the additional support they give from helping to organise any equipment you might need to sharing information.

“For my family Macmillan has been there to answer any questions and provide that extra level of support. When it came to the annual coffee morning I knew I wanted to give something back.”

Teachers, support staff and students from across the college all stepped up, putting their baking skills to the test and rustling up an array of cakes and sweet treats.

Connor said: “It was quite powerful to see as it is such a great event and everyone likes to get involved.

“We had our Foundation Learning students baking cakes, volunteers from across the college giving their time to help man the stall, we had staff and students both baking and buying the cakes and also donating any money they had in their pockets.”

Sport and fitness student Abbey McGregor, 18, of Lingdale, said: “It is an important event as it is raising awareness.”

While classmate Ryley Barnes, 17, of Loftus, who will be among those joining the Redcar Running Festival this weekend, added: “It’s good to be able to help a good cause.”
