If you’re following the apprenticeship route, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll spend your first day on working on site. While this can be a daunting experience, there’s no need to worry.

- Safety first! - If it’s your first time working on site, you might not be aware of the potential dangers that can face you, and while accidents on site are rare – it’s important to take precautions. When you first arrive on site, be sure to familiarise yourself with your surroundings and ensure that you have the correct safety equipment including your hard hat, hi-vis vest and safety shoes. You’ll also need to check that any equipment you’re using is in proper working order and don’t be afraid to flag any problems with a supervisor.
- Communication is key - It may sound obvious but listening to all the instructions provided is important – as is asking for clarity if there’s something you don’t understand. While being vocal can be nerve-wracking, your employers will respect if you raise your concerns and don’t stay silent.
- Be aware of other workers - Everyone on site has their own job to carry out and working in close quarters can sometimes be difficult, especially if you’re in a role which involves operating technical equipment or machinery.
- Show enthusiasm - As an apprentice, you’ll often be the most junior member of staff on site and so will probably be asked to complete some of the less desirable jobs. Showing enthusiasm for every task you’re presented with will stand you in good stead with your superiors and let everyone know that you’re a team player.
- Be productive - On any site, there will be peaks and troughs when it comes to activity. During quiet times, it’s important to remain productive. If you find yourself with nothing to do, don’t wait to be asked – be proactive and offer to help your colleagues.
