Putting real life at the heart of his subject is a priority for health and social care lecturer Andrew Johnson.
Now his unique approach to teaching the more challenging topics, in particular end-of-life care, has seen the Redcar and Cleveland College teacher announced winner of a national award and shortlisted for a second.
Named Educator of the Year in the NCFE Aspiration Awards today, Andrew said: “I feel both shocked and quite emotional – I was never expecting any of this.”
In fact, recognition and award wins were the last thing on his mind when, looking at ways to encourage students to develop knowledge around palliative and end-of-life care, he came up with the idea of creating comfort and care packages.
“The aim was to get the students really thinking about the needs of the individual and their loved ones around them,” he said. “I wanted them to consider their physical, emotional and sensory needs.”
With the students inspired by the task, the project quickly took on a life of its own with donations flooding in from fellow students, college colleagues, friends, family and the surrounding community.
The group was able to create dozens of packages which were distributed to hospital wards and hospices, making a real impact on people’s lives.
The care packages included items such as hand lotions, lip balms, blankets, and personal care products, to meet the patient’s practical needs, along with photo frames, battery operated candles and in some cases crystal angels to support their emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
Andrew explained: “Palliative and end-of-life care is about making the individual as comfortable as possible during the time they have. At these times it is also important for people to feel that there are things they can do to make their loved one’s final days better.”
Recognising the value of the project, Andrew was nominated for the NCFE Aspiration Award by colleagues at Redcar and Cleveland College.
Lyndsey Smith, curriculum manager for health, early years, access and distance learning, said: “By bringing creativity, care and strong partnerships together, Andrew turned a challenging unit into something genuinely meaningful. It is a great example of what further education can be at its best.”
A former care professional himself, Andrew is also among the finalists of the Palliative and End of Life Care Awards, up for the Best Fundraiser, Influencer and Campaigner title.
He regularly shares his own industry knowledge with students to help put the theory and practical skills into context.
With just six national titles up for grabs, the NCFE Aspiration Awards honour success in all its forms of learners, apprentices, educators and support staff.
