There are not many people who can honestly say that they love going to work every day.

But for 21-year-old Karl, that is the reality after starting work as a personal assistant and discovering it is the ideal job for him.

He said: “It feels very rewarding to be able to change someone’s life with what you do. Even something as simple as popping in to say hi can make that person’s life a little bit brighter.”

Inspired by seeing his own grandmother cared for, Karl decided that he wanted to pursue a career in care.

Signing up to the Redcar & Cleveland Care Academy, the course gave him the confidence boost he needed to get started.

Delivered as a partnership between Redcar & Cleveland College, Redcar & Cleveland Council, Job Centre Plus, Beyond Housing and local care companies, the free six-week course offers an introduction to working in adult social care.

With a guaranteed job interview at the end, Karl clearly impressed as he was snapped up straight away.

Now working with BJP Home Support, he hasn’t looked back.

“It feels amazing,” he said. “I got far more out of the academy than I ever could have thought. I got a job, I have made friends and it is like a family.”

The care academy was created to provide quality training to future care workers in a bid to help tackle a skills shortage in the care sector.

Applicants must be aged 18 or over and wish to gain employment in the adult care sector. All those who successfully complete the course are offered a guaranteed job interview with a local care company. Many have gone on to secure permanent employment in the industry.

Karl’s advice to anyone considering a career in care: “It takes hard work and determination. You need the right mindset and to be able to communicate, after all you could be the only person someone sees that day.”

The next Redcar & Cleveland Care Academy is due to start at Redcar & Cleveland College on April 8.
