A short course with a guaranteed job interview at the end might sound too good to be true.

But for Redcar mum Caroline, she got all that and more when she signed up to the Redcar & Cleveland Care Academy.

The innovative training programme is delivered by Redcar & Cleveland College in partnership with Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, Job Centre Plus, Beyond Housing and local care companies, with a view to tackling an emerging skills shortage in the sector.

Already the academy is proving effective, both for employers and people like Caroline.

A mum-of-three, she said: “I thought I was too old to retrain, but the kids are grown up and I decided to give it a go as it was something different. I didn’t know what to expect but I found that I loved it.”

Offering job seekers an introduction to working in care, the free six-week course covers sector-specific areas such as adult social care, emergency first aid at work and understanding safeguarding, as well as more general life skills including CV writing, career planning and interview techniques.

For Caroline, the course at Redcar & Cleveland College gave her the confidence and skills she needed to ace her interview and she is now working as a personal assistant with BJP Home Support. “I really do love it and wish I had done this years ago,” she said.

And the best bit, she said: “It is getting out there and meeting people, getting to know them and the satisfaction of helping and knowing you are making a difference to people’s lives.”
