A former Redcar & Cleveland College student has gained an apprenticeship with international manufacturing giant, British Steel.

Having completed a BTEC Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering, 25-year-old Carl Toulson has now taken on the role of Technical Degree Apprentice at the organisation’s Teesside plant.

Carl said: “I’m really pleased to have joined the team at British Steel. I’ve lived in Redcar for most of my life and the company is highly regarded as one of the top employers in the area“

“During the apprenticeship, I will be working across several departments. At the moment I’m based in the ‘test house’ which means I’m responsible for testing the different products manufactured in order to make sure they comply with relevant industry standards"

“My time at Redcar & Cleveland College really helped me prepare for the role. I needed a Level 3 qualification just to be considered for the apprenticeship and a big part of the the programme is completing college work so I feel that I’m in a great position.”

Martin Prior, Course Tutor in Engineering at Redcar & Cleveland College, said: “Carl is yet another example of how our pupils can use the practical skills gained on their courses to succeed once they move on from the College“

“I’m thrilled that he has been able to take the knowledge and expertise he gained here to impress his new employers, and wish him the best of luck in his new role.”
