Public Services students will be among those reflecting on the real lives of the fallen at a historic Remembrance Service at Redcar and Cleveland College this week.
The annual event pays tribute to the former Old Boys of Sir William Turner’s School who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars.
This Friday (November 6th, 2026) the service will bring together friends and family members with links back to the former Coatham school, representatives of The Royal British Legion Redcar branch, the community, college students, staff and invited guests.
College principal Sarah Johnson said: “It is a real privilege to play a part in this Remembrance event that has such close and immediate ties to our own community.
“The service offers college students and staff an opportunity not only to pay their respects to those who lost their lives but also recognise the impact such loss would have had, and continues to have over 100 years later, here in Redcar and Cleveland.”
The Celtic Cross War Memorial on the outer corner of the college grounds and a memorial stone within the college bears the names of the 48 Old Boys who lost their lives in the First World War and 55 during the Second World War.
The service at the college will include details of the people behind those names, as shared by historian and former lecturer at Sir William Turner’s Sixth Form, Peter Chester.
Each name has also been inscribed on to 103 small wooden crosses which will be placed at the foot of the war memorial alongside wreaths.
Those wishing to attend the service on Friday are asked to assemble at the college from 1.30pm ready for the service to start in the Higher Education Centre at 2pm.
Following the service guests will move on to the war memorial on Corporation Road for the laying of the wreaths, the Last Post will sound, and a two-minute silence observed.
