Course overview

The BTEC Level 3 Award in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Technical Knowledge) gives you a strong introduction to the knowledge and skills used across the engineering and manufacturing industries. You’ll explore key engineering principles and develop your understanding of the maths, science and technology that underpin modern engineering. Studied alongside A Level Maths and Applied Science, this qualification helps you build a broad range of technical, practical and analytical skills that are highly valued by employers and universities, providing an excellent foundation for further study, apprenticeships or careers in engineering and manufacturing.

This course will be studied alongside A Level Maths and Applied Science, giving you a strong foundation in engineering, mathematics and scientific principles. You will develop problem-solving, analytical and practical skills while exploring topics across engineering, biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.

Mandatory units within the engineering award will include:

  • Health and Safety in the Engineering Workplace
  • Communications for Engineering Technicians
  • Mathematics for Engineering Technicians

There will be a selection of units that will be designed to complement the expectations of employers and the Clean Energy industry. These may be subject to change but are likely to include:

  • Engineering Project
  • Electrical and Mechanical principles

Learning will mainly take place in the classroom through a range of theory-based activities. You will take part in lessons, discussions and independent research to develop your knowledge and understanding of engineering concepts. Throughout the course, you will complete assignments, and projects that allow you to apply what you have learned.

You will also have opportunities to work collaboratively with others on group activities, sharing your ideas and presenting your findings. Active participation in lessons is encouraged to help build your confidence and support your progress.

Where possible, practical workshop activities will be included to help bring engineering concepts to life and give you hands-on experience of the subject.
