Course overview
The Access to Higher Education, Counselling Diploma, is a qualification which prepares people without traditional qualifications for study at university. If you would like to go to university but left school without the qualifications you need or you may not have been in education for several years, then an Access to HE course could be the course for you. There is no upper-age limit for Access to HE courses. Courses are part time and students complete the course in one year.
Access day classes are currently over two days per week at Redcar and Cleveland College.
The Diploma is made up of a series of units which are individually graded.
Subjects will include Academic study techniques, Counselling theory, Fundamental skills of counselling, Personal development in counselling, and Understanding stress.
Course information
The production of an electronic portfolio of evidence is crucial. Assessment involves the writing of essays, reports, presentations, research and health promotion activities.
On successful completion of the access diploma students can apply to university for a place on FdA Counselling Degree.
All learners will be considered on their individual merits although recent relevant learning at level two is advantageous. All applicants will participate with an electronic information session. Following this, will be asked to complete a literacy and numeracy test to determine if a place can be offered.
Access to H.E. can be fully funded with a 19+ Advance Learner Loan (conditions apply).
Your 19+ Advanced Learner Loan will be written off if you successfully progress onto University and complete your course.
If you are aged 19 to 23 you may be entitled to full funding of your course if you have not already achieved a full Level 3 qualification.

Class sessions will involve lectures and demonstrations as well as interactive learning using IT and Microsoft Teams. Learners are supported and encouraged to develop independent academic learning techniques.
