Course overview
Functional Skills are a great way to build confidence, improve skills and give you essential English skills for everyday life and work. You will attend a weekly two-hour classroom session and work with experienced tutors who can support you no matter what level you are already at. You may be a complete beginner or just want to refresh your memory and gain an up to date, nationally recognised, qualification. We can support you.
Individual learning plans covering specific problem areas such as:
- Spelling
- Punctuation
- Grammar
- Letter writing
- Report writing
- Improving reading skills
- Developing communication skills.
Course information
You will also be expected to complete a range of mock examinations throughout the academic year at a level appropriate to you.
You will sit final examinations, these include:
- Examinations in Reading and Writing
- Speaking & Listening tasks
Students can progress through levels from Entry Level to Level 2. Level 2 provides good opportunities for progression to the new 9-1 GCSE in English or an FE or HE course that requires a Level 2 qualification in English.
No formal entry requirements are necessary. All learners will be required to take an initial and diagnostic assessment to establish working level which will be arranged at enrolment.
Free, for those who do not have an A* to C /9-4 grade GCSE.
The focus of the course is firmly on weekly, taught sessions at the college in a classroom environment. A variety of resources will be available to cover all the topics required. These include:
- PowerPoint presentations
- Practice exam style assessments
- You can access additional tutorial videos and resources online through Microsoft Teams
- Peer and tutor support
- Opportunity for one-to-one support with our subject specialist progress coach
