In Tees Valley, 35,000 people are employed in the business services sector. Typical job roles can include office administrators, customer services staff and human resources personnel.

It’s clear that this industry plays a vital role in the local economy as employment rates in this sector sit above the national average. This indicates a demand from employers recruiting workers and the real-world prospects available to those looking to start their career.

Apprenticeships offer a valuable entry point into the workplace. Trainees learn skills on the job, gaining insight into the working environment and earning a wage. The remainder of their study is off-the-job learning at college, in a classroom or workshop environment, learning theory to support their skills.

At Redcar and Cleveland College, we offer a Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship. To get a closer look at what it's like to train in this sector, we sat down with two of our apprentices who spoke about how they’re finding their course and how the reality lives up to expectations.

“My family told me I should try and find an apprenticeship so I could gain experience and earn a wage, and I thought business administration was a good qualification to have.

“I work for the council and support the fleet department at work.

“Business administration may seem intimidating and come across like it’s very intellectual but it’s just like any other course.

“My favourite module of training so far has been external factors that can affect an organisation. I am interested in the political aspects that can impact a business.

“Claire is a good tutor. If I ask her a question outside of college, she replies to me quickly. Even when the class is bigger, I still feel like I still get the support I need.”

“I heard about the apprenticeship from a friend and applied online. I thought it would lead to a wide range of job opportunities.

“In my role, I support the adult social care department within the council.

“My favourite part of college learning so far has been the module on how to lead a project. I like the idea of making my own stamp in the workplace.

“I would recommend this apprenticeship to others.”
