For National Apprenticeship Week 2022, we caught up with Tiffany, one of our plastering apprentices to talk about all things plastering, apprenticeships and the future.

Tiffany is in her second year of her plastering apprenticeship and is employed by a local construction company.

Can you tell us more about your apprenticeship?

My apprenticeship is really good. I get stuck in with all aspects of work that needs to be done. When I first started it showed how challenging work life can be but once I had done my first wall, I looked back and it’s an achievement. Some days I will be out on a job and others I will be getting the materials and van loaded for the next project.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I would enter a job and get the work area sorted and prepped ready to start the day. It would then be time to get the mix ready and start plastering. As I go I would make sure that the tools are always clean and the area is tidy. Once all the work is done, I would give the area a good clean down in the rooms and leave the area as it was when I entered.

What would you recommend about an apprenticeship?

There are many advantages to doing an apprenticeship such as experiencing work life, being more hands on and learning more. It is very different to studying a course at college as you are working for a company so you have to give everything 100%.

Why did you choose to go down the plastering route?

Once I started my multi skill course at college, I had a very good plastering teacher called Richard. He pushed me to aim at what I wanted to do. I then was able to get an apprenticeship and I have been doing this for the last year and a half. I still like what I do and although it is challenging, it is worth it.

What is next for you after your apprenticeship?

I am looking to continue to work for the company for the near future after becoming qualified and completing my apprenticeship. One day I am hoping to have my own plastering business and be able to work for myself.
