Well done to all those celebrating results day this week.

We have been catching up with some of our students to share their success...

Claire and Jordan

Mum and son duo, Claire and Jordan, made their way to Redcar and Cleveland College hoping to celebrate not just one of them passing, but both.

And they weren't disappointed as Claire received a grade 5 and her son achieved a grade 4.

The pair sat their maths exams together, hoping that Jordan would achieve the grades he needs with the help and support of his mum.

“I decided to give it a go as well to give Jordan a bit of help and motivation,” said Claire.

When asked if he got the grades he wanted, Jordan said: “My goal was to pass so I’m happy that I’ve been able to achieve a 4 this time.”

Both Claire and Jordan praised the teaching they received.

“The teaching and tutors themselves were excellent, they helped us each step of the way and really made the lessons fun and easy to understand.”

Benjamin

Confidence and hard work has paid off for 16-year-old Benjamin as he achieved a grade 4 in maths and a 5 in English.

After being home schooled from Year 8, he started a functional skills course at Redcar and Cleveland College.

Praising the excellent teaching at Redcar, he said: “The teachers were great and always very friendly. They were always available whenever I had any issues with the lessons and explained things in a way that was easy to understand.”

“I’m going to Askham Bryam College to study animal management. I’m really hopeful of having a career in the animal industry when I’m older.”

When asked if he would recommend the course Benjamin said: “Absolutely yes! The support is great and it’s a nice place to study.”

Yvonne

For 23 years, Yvonne, 55, has worked with the NHS, with 13 of those years as an assistant practitioner with The James Cook University Hospital. When the opportunity arose for her to train as a nurse, she was told she would need her maths and English to join the course. She said: “I did wonder if I was a bit too old to come back to college but I have always wanted to be a qualified nurse. I was a bit apprehensive about starting maths and English but believe it or not, I actually ended up enjoying it!”

Natalie Chapman, programme area lead for English and maths at Redcar and Cleveland College, said: “Yvonne’s dedication is inspirational, she would finish a night shift and come straight to college to do extra hours of study. Working full-time in the NHS as a key worker and also taking on her maths and English, she is an example to others that you can achieve whatever you put your mind to.”

Yvonne added: “The staff were amazing with me. I would recommend the course to anybody looking to achieve their maths and English. My grandchildren are so proud and I can’t wait to start my nursing course.”

Yvonne has received a conditional offer to study nursing.
