It was a cleaning job that helped Robbie realise he wanted to work as a paramedic.

Before moving to Loftus the 19-year-old had the opportunity to work alongside the Yorkshire Ambulance Service cleaning the vehicles and supporting the emergency ambulance staff in the A&E department.

Robbie said: “Before I started studying at Redcar and Cleveland I was bouncing back and forth trying to find a permanent job. I was working within hospitality but it wasn’t something I really wanted to do. Although I was only cleaning vehicles, I got to see first-hand what it was like to work as a paramedic. It was from then that I knew I wanted to work for the ambulance service but I needed to complete a Health & Social Care qualification to get me to university.”

Despite starting the course late, with the help of the tutors he was able to catch up with the assignments.

Robbie added: “My son was a new-born when I started the course and joining later than the others was a struggle but the tutors were amazing. They understood my circumstances and what was going on in my life and without their support I don’t think I would have completed the course with an A, as well as balancing my personal life at home.”

Now living in Stockton-on-Tees, Robbie’s future goal is to eventually work as a paramedic with HART (Hazardous Area Response Team) with the North East Ambulance Service.
