Lessons in the world of IT and digital media have stepped up at Redcar and Cleveland College, where students have launched their own small enterprise to hone the skills of their trade.

The team’s new Digital Hub is open to external clients, providing a range of digital design services to meet their business needs.

From designing logos to flyers, 3D printing, website and social media support, course leader Sam Beel said: “The aim is to replicate the working environment, to develop students’ future employability skills.”

Operating two afternoons and one morning a week, college assignments have now given way to “jobs” and one-to-one tutorials have been rebranded as appraisals.

“We are using the terminology to match the workplace,” said Sam.

And splitting the class into departments, covering finance and logistics, graphic design, content development and quality, students had to apply for their positions and each area has team members, a supervisor and manager.

With 12 clients so far, consisting of external businesses and college staff members, Sam said: “It has been a learning curve for the students but attendance has been excellent and the feedback has been great.

“Students plan and pitch their ideas to clients either in person or over Teams - this gives them a wealth of experience and boosts confidence and transferable skills.”

While plans have been delayed due to Covid 19, next year the Digital Hub will also incorporate Business and AAT students, who will work in finance and administration.

Sam said: “It has been fantastic so far and we have some amazing comments from clients.

“The students are also learning and experiencing, important lessons about the working environment, team work and, perhaps for the first time, when designing something for others how it is the client’s wants and needs that are important, rather than their own personal preference.”
