What better way to test your sea legs than getting on board the world-famous Tall Ships Race?

That’s what two Redcar and Cleveland College students, Jay and Tom, are doing this week, and they can’t wait to get started.

Part of a group of up to 100 young people selected to represent Teesside as the international Tall Ships Race heads to Hartlepool, they will spend seven days on board the Wylde Swan.

“I just hope I’m not seasick,” said 16-year-old policing student Jay with a laugh.

Flying out to Amsterdam on Saturday, the pair will join the crew of one of the best-known tall ships in the fleet in Den Helder, Holland, ready to set sail on Sunday, arriving in Hartlepool mid-week.

On-board they will join a crew rotation, carrying out a range of tasks including setting and stowing sails, rope work, navigation, and night watch.

The trip has been made possible for the duo thanks to funding from the Sir William Turner Foundation, an educational charity that supports opportunities for those living or studying in Redcar.

Not afraid of a challenge, public services student Tom, 17, said: “I have been on a few cruises before, but this is something very different.  We have undergone training including team building exercises and knot tying.  I have also been speaking to others that have taken part to get a real insight of what to expect.”

The Wylde Swan itself, is one the largest schooners in the fleet.  Jay, who is also a police cadet with Cleveland Police, said: “Below deck there are bunk beds and there’s a kitchen on board.”

Recognising the enormity of the experience ahead, Tom said: “This opportunity is a once in a lifetime experience and I am so grateful for it.”

Jay, who is also taking the opportunity to raise money for Care of Police Survivors, a charity that provides support to families of police officers and staff who have lost their lives in service, added: “I can’t wait to get started. My family are all really happy for me, and also a bit envious, as they know how amazing this opportunity is.”

Redcar and Cleveland College’s programme area leader for sport and public services, Kelly Coupland, said: “We are immensely proud of both Jay and Tom for putting themselves forward to be part of the Tall Ships race, representing Redcar and Cleveland College. The pair will gain vital life skills such as working as part of a team and learn to communicate with people from different countries. We can’t wait to hear all about their adventures when they return.”
