Named winner of the Apprentice of the Year title at Esh, alongside six other talented apprentices, Tyler was recognised for his exceptional dedication, work ethic and willingness to learn his trade. His work exceeds the standard that would be expected of someone at the start of their career after only a short time with the business. He was highlighted as someone who has a proactive approach and is able to work independently, actively seeking to help others on site where possible.
Esh is embracing a “grow your own” model when it comes to talent in the workplace.
The business is investing in its staff, offering a range of training options and encouraging the uptake of professional memberships and qualifications. On the last check, Esh had more than 60 team members enrolled onto an apprenticeship which equates to 8% of the workforce.
Adopting this approach will ensure delivery of future pipeline projects and implementation of business strategies.
And Redcar and Cleveland College plastering apprentice, Tyler, is proving himself a star amongst the Esh workforce.
We caught up with Tyler to find out more about his apprenticeship and the success he is having at the start of his career.
How did you secure your apprenticeship?
“I was on a joinery apprenticeship at another college but I wasn’t enjoying it, so I was looking for something else. I heard from family members who work at Esh Group that a plastering apprenticeship role had come up. I had applied for other apprenticeship roles at Esh previously but was unsuccessful. When I applied for this role, I was offered the job.”
What is it about plastering that you enjoy?
“I enjoy working on plastering for rewiring projects. Esh works with big housing organisations, and we can fit five kitchens in a week. During these projects, there is a big team working on site to finish the job.”
What have you gained from your apprenticeship training?
“Mainly technique. At the start I couldn’t get plaster off the handboard and people told me that with practice I would get there and get the hang of it. Gradually throughout my apprenticeship, I have improved and now I love it.”
What is your off-the-job training at Redcar and Cleveland College like?
“I’ve been at other colleges and not really enjoyed it, but at Redcar I feel comfortable in college. My tutor is really good, and I’ve learned a lot in the workshops. We work in bays, so we get to do individual training. I do some classroom-based work where I learn with other apprentices too.”
What is it like to work at Esh Group?
“They always have work on and big projects. The company is well known and has a good reputation.
"I work with a big team of people of all ages who I learn a lot from.
"I recently won the ‘Apprentice of the Year Award’ alongside six other trainees at Esh. I was the only trade apprentice in the group to win the award.”
What’s next for you?
“I want to stay working for Esh. They have long term projects that will last 10 years. I am going to start learning how to drive so I can drive myself to work.”
