Course overview
This entry-level course introduces beginners to the essential barbering skills required for working in a professional barbershop, such as hair cutting, facial hair grooming, and conducting safe client consultations. It blends practical, hands-on experience with key knowledge of health and safety and customer service, helping students prepare for employment or further training in the barbering industry.
This certificate provides the essential foundation skills needed to work in the barbering industry. You will learn how to:
- Follow health & safety in the salon,
- Advise and consult with clients
- Shampoo, condition and treat hair and the scalp
- Cut men’s hair
- Cut and shape facial hair
- Dry and finish men’s hair
These skills form the core competencies required to begin a career in professional barbering.
Course information
Assessment is ongoing and includes:
- Practical assessments observed by your assessor while you carry out barbering services.
- Online or written theory tests to check your knowledge and understanding.
- A portfolio of evidence containing practical work, observations and theory components.
All units must be completed and passed to achieve the full Certificate.
4 GCSE Grades 3 or above (including maths & English) or Level 1 Certificate/Diploma in hairdressing
- You will be required to purchase a Barbering Kit
- You will be required to wear a suitable uniform- all Black professional clothing
- Access to models for practical assessments
Your learning will combine:
- Practical, hands on training in a real or simulated salon environment, practising skills on models or training heads.
- Tutor demonstrations led by experienced barbering professionals.
- Classroom theory sessions covering techniques, consultation, products and health & safety.
- Real client experience where possible, helping you build confidence and speed.
