A new career is in the pipeline for Ryan.

Impressing during a short course at Redcar and Cleveland College, he was offered a role as storeman with training delivery partner Total Solutions Ltd.

“I wasn’t expecting the company delivering the training to offer me a job,” he said.

It was welcome news for the 33-year-old from Redcar who had found himself out of work during the lockdown.

Embarking on the Routeway to Rope and Painting Industry course gave him the skills to try something new.

Having previously worked for 10 years with social services, Ryan had been ready for a change.

Most recently he worked as a stockperson on a turkey farm.

“My long term plan for a few years had been to save up and put myself through courses similar to this,” he said. “I never managed to do it. It is ridiculous how perfect this course was for me.”

The Routeway to Rope and Painting Industry course was funded by the Tees Valley Mayor and Combined Authority’s Adult Education Budget.

Working alongside Jobcentre Plus and Redcar and Cleveland Council’s Grangetown and Skinningrove hubs, the course covered a host of accredited new skills including IRATA Rope Access, ECITB Working at Heights, Rigging and Slinging, ECITB Site Safety Passport, asbestos awareness and key employability skills.
