An historic Remembrance Service returns to Redcar and Cleveland College this week, as students, staff and the community are invited to honour former pupils of Sir William Turner’s School who lost their lives during the First and Second World War.
In its 102nd year, the event has become a poignant date on the college calendar, offering the chance for current college students, friends, family and Old Boys of the school to remember the plight of those that have gone before them.
During the ceremony public services students will be asked to read out the names of 48 Old Boys who died on active service during the First World War and 55 more who lost their lives in the Second World War.
Redcar and Cleveland College’s roots can be linked back to the historic school and sixth form, and the annual service is now a firm part of the college’s traditions.
This year the Remembrance Service will be held in the college’s Higher Education Centre at 2pm on Friday (November 8, 2024). Those wishing to attend are asked to assemble at 1.30pm.
Following the service an Honour Guard from the Royal British Legion will lead the congregation out to the Celtic Cross War Memorial, on the corner of Corporation Road and Locke Road.
The Last Post will sound before a two minutes’ silence is observed and wreaths will be laid.
College students, staff and members of the public will place wooden crosses at the memorial, each bearing the name of one of the Old Boys who lost their lives.
Following the ceremony, refreshments will be served in the college.
Some 350 Old Boys fought in the First World War and 650 served in the armed forces during the Second World War.
