Skelton-based Dots n Spots is a registered charity that’s been providing day nursery and out of school club support to local families for over two decades. A core part of their growth is employing apprentices, with many individuals taken on in permanent roles after achieving their qualification.
We spoke to Emma, Business Development Manager, about why apprentices bring such value to Dots n Spots. She said: “Moulding the next generation of talent to our values and ethos is such an effective way to recruit and retain talent. We have high expectations of our team, and honestly, I couldn’t speak highly enough about what apprentices bring to the organisation.
“Watching individuals grow in confidence and progress through the organisation is priceless. In the current recruitment climate, supporting the next generation of early years talent is essential to continue to offer the high-quality services we do.”
Dots n Spots most recent apprentices, Ella, Poppy and Ruby, have all either completed, or nearly completed, their Level 3 Early Years Apprenticeship at Redcar and Cleveland College.
Ruby said: “I went to college and did A levels, but it only solidified to me that I’m a hands-on learner. My brother attended Dots n Spots and one day I just went for it and asked if there were any job vacancies – and I’ve been here ever since!
“I love that I get to make kids laugh, getting down to their level, supporting their development and building bonds with them and their parents/carers. I would encourage anyone looking to get into the sector to go for it, it’s the best thing I’ve done.”
Similarly, Ella says that an apprenticeship is the best decision she could have made for her future. She explained: “After doing work experience at a primary school I knew that a future working with children was my dream. I love what I do, every day is different and I’ve learned so much. After I completed my apprenticeship, I was taken on full time, and I hope to continue to grow here.”
Poppy began her career journey on a health and social course, but childcare sparked her interest, knowing that with an apprenticeship she could experience the industry first hand and get paid to learn. She said: “If you know what you want to do, an apprenticeship is the perfect option. I love the people here, they’re all so warm and welcoming. That environment makes for a really great place to learn.”
An apprenticeship in early years covers a variety of topics including child development, paediatric first aid, reflective practice and safeguarding.
